This year, the 5th annual competition the Shopping Center Awards, organized by the Ukrainian Retail Association, was held as the Retail & Development Business Awards part. The investigation purpose is to provide retailers with consolidated information about retail properties and an understanding: as far as the rental rate set by the developer corresponds to the SEC and the services rendered quality. Information will be useful to both successful market players and new brands, only considering the entering the Ukrainian market possibility.
The selection criteria for nominees for the prize each time vary slightly to present the most complete and objective information. So, the Kiev shopping and entertainment centers were evaluated and ranked in the first competition, in 2014. A year later, the 36 shopping centers indicators of the Ukrainian largest cities – Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa, the Dnepr and Lvov – were analyzed at the second competition. In 2016, the competition geography expanded significantly – experts and consumers choose the best among 25 shopping centers operating not in million-plus cities, but in regional centers, Krivoy Rog and Mariupol. Last year, 29 SEC evaluated which were opened in Kiev and regional centers of Ukraine for the period from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016.
This year the selection criteria were again adjusted. The competition was attended by trade and shopping- entertaining centers of the five largest cities in the country (Kiev, Dnepr, Kharkov, Odessa and Lvov) with 15,000 sq. m GLA. It was simultaneously evaluated by the Retail & Development Business Awards Expert Council by filling out a questionnaire, and consumers – by online-voting. The experts gave each SEC an assessment on 4 groups by the following criteria: Traffic, Technique, Tenants and Marketing. Market participants nominated one rating on a scale from 1 to 5. The final rating was calculated taking into account the points which the SEC received by the Expert Council and market participants voting. Moreover, the experts’ assessment gave 51% final result, and open voting – 49%. The full research methodology is available here.
