Germans press up the British: Aldi and Lidl have increased its share in the UK grocery market

British food retailers increased sales, but their growth rates fell far behind the German discounters Aldi and Lidl.

It is reported by Interfax with reference to the Kantar Worldpanel study. The largest retailer Tesco’ sales grew by 1.8% for May 12 to August 12, 2018, largely due to the active growth in the chain Express stores, but the market share decreased by 0.5 percentage points, to 27.4%.

Its main competitor, J Sainsbury Plc, increased sales by 1.2% due to an increasing in online-sales and demand for Taste the Difference line premium products. However, the market share decreased by 0.4%, to 15.5%. Asda, the American Walmart subsidiary company, increased sales by 2.6%, and market share decreased by 0.1%, to 15.2%.

Wm Morrison Supermarkets’ sales jumped by 2.7%, but this only allowed to keep the market share at the same level – 10.4%.

Meanwhile, Aldi’ sales soared by 12.6%, Lidl – by 8.6%, due to which both companies increased its market share (by 0.6% and 0.3%, respectively), to 7.6% and 5.5%.
