“Free cashbox” from a top-manager: McDonald’s office workers spent the day at the restaurant

The company’s office workers turned into ordinary restaurant employees for one day around the world, on McDonald’s Founder’s Day. Why did they do it?

October 5th it would be 116 years Ray Kroc, McDonald’s Founder. This year, McDonald’s Corporation revived the celebrating Founder’s Day tradition. And a week ago, on October 5, the company’s office workers around the world left their usual jobs and joined restaurant teams to serve visitors together during the day. This tradition originated in the United States in 1986, two years after the Ray Kroc death, to pay tribute to the company’s founder.

This year, employees from all over the world joined the celebration, as well as corporate management. For example, McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook worked in one of McDonald’s in Detroit.

Ukrainian McDonald’s, which has about 100 office workers, was no exception. On this day, the office’ representatives worked in every Kyiv establishment.

“An important principle of McDonald’s work is to be obsessed with the visitor’s needs. The founder Day celebration gave us the opportunity to feel even better that these are not just words, but really what we live by, the ideas that we daily implement. This experience is very valuable. I, like our other workers, could communicate with visitors, to understand their needs even deeper. We can exceed their desires and expectations, only in this way, knowing what our guests are thinking”, – Grzegorz Khmelyarsky, McDonald’s in Ukraine General Director said.

Grzegorz worked at McDonald’s for a new format with future experience on Les Kurbas Avenue in Kiev. This is one of the establishments that offer experience that you usually don’t expect in a fast-food restaurant: electronic self-service terminals, table service, a hospitality expert whose task is solely to take care about visitors and quickly respond to their needs and the like.

“I talked with dozens of our customers. Many of them already enjoy the  new format benefits, although at first they were surprised that they could now use the self-service terminal, employees could bring an order right at the table and would certainly take an interest in the guest’s impressions and self bring additional napkins or, for example, straws. This is a real revolution in McDonald’s. In general, I was once again convinced that we offer our visitors a very cool progressive experience, followed by the future”, – McDonald’s CEO in Ukraine shared.

In Ukraine, 8 new format McDonald’s are already operating in Kiev, Lvov, Cherkasy, Borispol and Kharkov. By the year end, the company plans to increase such restaurants number to at least 15.

However, Founder’s Day is not the only day of the year when office and restaurant workers work together. As it described in McDonald’s, all new office workers always undergo multi-day training in a restaurant in order to better understand the work processes and further use this knowledge to effectively interact and support the restaurants activities. In addition, employees can practice in a restaurant at any time if they see such a need.
