Consumer confidence in Ukraine, April 2017: index equaled 54,9

The consumer confidence of Ukrainians did not experience significant changes in April 2017: The Consumer Confidence Index equals 54,9, which is 0,6 points lower than the indicator in March.

Index of Propensity to Consume and Index of Economic Expectations have changed most of all. It is proved by the data of The consumer confidence of Ukrainians survey conducted monthly by GfK Ukraine.

Index of the Current Situation decreased by 3,1 points to the level of 50,2. The components of this index have changed as follows:

  • Index of Current Personal Financial Standing equaled 43, which is 1 point higher than in March 2017;
  • Index of Propensity to Consume decreased by 7,1 points and reached the indicator of 57,4.

Index of Economic Expectations increased by 1 point and reached 57,9 in April. The components of this index have changed as follows:

  • Index of Expected Changes in Personal Financial Standing increased by 2 points comparing to March’s indicator and reached the level of 57;
  • Index of Expectations of the Country’s Economic Development Over the Next Year decreased by 2,8 points and equals 45,2;
  • Index of Expectations of the Country’s Economic Development in the Country Over the Next 5 Years increased by 7,9 points and reached the level of 71,6.

In April, the expectations of Ukrainians regarding the possibility of unemployment has not changed: Index of Expectations of Changes in Unemployment reached the level of 142,4, which is 0,2 points lower than the respective indicator in March. Meanwhile, Index of Inflationary Expectations reached 183,9, which is 1,6 points higher than in March. The expectations of Ukrainians regarding the hryvna’s exchange rate in the coming three months improved: Index of Devaluation Expectations decreased by 3,5 points and reached the level of 140,1.

«Overall Consumer Confidence Index has not changed. On the one hand, the expectations of the country’s economic development in the country over the next 5 years improved. On the other hand, Index of Propensity to Consume decreased. We consider, that improvements in the expectations of the country’s economic development are the result of the adoption of visa-free regime between Ukraine and the EU. It is necessary to mention that the decrease in the Index of Propensity to Consume happened in the group of low income consumers», – GfK Ukraine analysts comment.
