First Ukrainian-made self-checkout machines are set up at Pchelka, Kyiv
The first self-checkouts made by company RED (a part of Ukrainian holding Modern-Expo Group) are installed in a store of Pchelka Market chain in Kyiv, Konovaltsia St.
Ukrainian supermarkets started trying out self-checkouts at the end of 2017. NOVUS, Silpo, and Auchan became the pioneers of implementing.
Self-checkouts are checkout machines serving customers without a cashier. The buyer scans products and pays by cash or card, then leaves the store. Ukrainian laws require age check when buying alcohol and cigarettes; therefore, stores hire the assistant that can be called for help to the checkout.
The machines make grocery shopping faster and handy to buyers, and money-saving for retailers. One checkout machine replaces 2 or 3 cashiers and relieves humans from work at the off-peak time.
Company RED has been producing self-checkouts since 2017. It sales products mostly on the Western market but still works for Ukraine too. Using local plants and relatively cheap manufacturing, it offers machines with attractive prices.
